TEMPORARY ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR, MEDICAL INFORMATION
Summary
The Associate Director, Medical Information (Temporary position, up to 1 year contract with possibility of extension) will report to the Director, Head of Medical Information and be a critical component of the team at Ionis. This individual will provide integral Medical Information support to the cross functional team. This position is responsible for the provision of accurate, timely, and relevant medical information in response to inquiries from healthcare providers, healthcare organizations, patients, and caregivers. This position will also support congress booth activities, and other Medical Affairs initiatives including support for the clinical trial call center and Ionis Expanded Access Program. The candidate will have a solid clinical, scientific, and pharmaceutical industry background as well as a deep understanding of Medical Information principles, guidelines, and industry standards. This temporary role will be based remotely with occasional work expected from our Carlsbad, CA or Boston, MA offices, as well as travel to support medical congresses.
Responsibilities
The hourly pay scale for this position is $71.03/hour to $95.28/hour

Responsibilities
- Serve as an active member of the Therapeutic Area Core Medical team, providing relevant Medical Information metrics and insights to inform overall strategy as well as ensuring Medical Information activities are aligned with medical plans as appropriate.
- Create, proactively update, and facilitate the review of Medical Information content (standard response letters, custom responses, and FAQs) for the assigned Therapeutic Area assuring quality data, scientific rigor, and appropriate level of compassion.
- Collaborate with call center staff to handle inquiries for the assigned Therapeutic Area, ensuring responses are timely, accurate, fair-balanced, evidence-based and in alignment with applicable guidelines, regulations, and company policies.
- Manage call center inquiry escalations to ensure appropriate responses are provided in a timely manner.
- Provide Medical Information support as needed to multi-functional teams (Medical Affairs, Field Medical, Scientific Communications, Clinical Development and Operations, Commercial, Patient Advocacy, etc).
- Develop and maintain an in-depth understanding of product knowledge in the assigned Therapeutic Area, labeling, associated disease states, relevant scientific and medical literature, treatment guidelines, and competitive landscape.
- Critically evaluate literature, interpret complex data, write effectively, and clearly communicate recommendations.
- Provide Medical Information support at top-tier medical and scientific congresses including staffing the Medical Information Booth as well as congress planning support for the assigned Therapeutic Area.
- Develop responses to questions regarding expanded access from patients, caregivers, and physicians, as well as support planning, development, and operations of expanded access programs.
- Support the clinical trial call center inquiry handling processes and workflows to address questions from healthcare providers, healthcare organizations, patients, caregivers, and other external parties efficiently and compliantly.
- With guidance from Clinical Operations and in collaboration with the clinical trial call center vendor, generate, proactively update, and facilitate the review of content (e.g., email and phone scripts).
- Provide support for other critical Medical Information projects as needed.
- Clinical advanced degree: PharmD, PhD, NP, PA, RN, MPH with 5+ years’ progressive experience in the biopharmaceutical/pharmaceutical industry
- 3+ years of direct experience in Medical Information
- Proven ability to work in cross functional collaboration with call centers, external agencies, and internal colleagues from various departments (Medical Affairs, Commercial, Patient Advocacy, Clinical, Legal, Regulatory, Safety/Pharmacovigilance, etc.)
- Exhibits advanced knowledge of Medical Information work and processes, and the applicable industry guidance and regulations
- Proficiency in medical writing and medical content creation; able to correctly understand, interpret, and accurately communicate scientific data
- Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and communications skills with flawless attention to detail
- Strong computer skills, with proficiency in various technology platforms such as Medical Information inquiry management systems, cloud-based content management systems (e.g., SharePoint, Veeva), literature search engines (e.g., PubMed, RightFind) and the Microsoft Office Suite (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
- Demonstrated strong verbal, written, and presentation skills
- Able to travel and attend conferences to represent Ionis Medical Information (~15% travel)
