Job Description
£28,047 - 31,460 (pro rata)

Six Months Fixed Term Contract until 31 July 2025

About the Role:

As a Research Associate at MTIF, you’ll contribute directly to an innovative project testing antimicrobial / antibiofilm coatings designed for urinary catheters, aimed at the long term goal of reducing infection rates in healthcare settings. Working alongside a multidisciplinary team (NTU, MTIF and MetalloBio) in MTIF's state-of-the-art microbiology laboratory, you'll support team to test the efficacy of the antimicrobial coatings against both laboratory and clinically isolated bacteria.

We’re seeking an enthusiastic individual who brings strong analytical skills and attention to detail. The ideal candidate should have a Bioscience related (preferably Microbiology) degree, or relevant experience with desirable skills in antimicrobial testing, material science and / or biofilm research. In this role, you'll be responsible for learning, executing and refining laboratory protocols and analysing results. You will also be part of regular internal and external meetings gaining experience in both the academic and commercial settings

We are exploring MetalloBio’s leading antimicrobial compounds, KLS-116 and KLS-219. These compounds have had extensive antimicrobial testing. However, at the suggestion of clinical experts, a change of scope to target complicated urinary tract and catheter infections means proof-of-concept data is required to establish whether the compounds coated onto surfaces such as catheters remain effective in preventing biofilm formation. The main objectives of the work is to:

  • Evaluate the antimicrobial efficacy of this coating against key laboratory based and then clinical pathogens
  • Optimisation of the coatings following efficacy data by MetalloBio
  • Test a lead coating methodology in more complex models including a modified drip flow model to assess coating effectiveness in physiologically relevant conditions.

This interdisciplinary project will use expertise in chemistry, materials science, and microbiology, fostering further collaboration between Nottingham Trent University, MetalloBio Ltd., and the Medical Technologies Innovation Centre.

For more details, please refer to the role profile. Even if you don’t meet every single requirement, we encourage you to apply – we’re focused on finding the right person for the role. To support a diverse and inclusive team, we also welcome secondments.
